Nylon vs. Silicone – Which One to Choose From?

Cooking is a true form of art. It is said by many that “a cook is only as good as his utensils”. Whether you consider yourself as a baking genius, a complete catering novice or a culinary artist, selecting and going with good quality utensils will stand the test time and last for many years. But with so many types of utensils to choose from, identifying the best one becomes quite an uphill task. There is a wide range of choices such as wood, nylon, silicone, etc. when it comes to kitchen utensils. But among all, nylon utensils came on top because of their strength, durability and heat resistant properties.

Heat resistant nylon utensil sets are popular for all types of cuisines. They are extremely versatile and tough enough for both cooking and baking. Everyone falls into a dilemma when it comes to choosing between nylon and silicone. While both substances are similar, still some key differences lie between the two.

Key Features of Utensils

  • Stick Resistance: Nylon and silicone are far more stick resistant than any other materials present. But nylon utensils are mostly considered best for their stick-resistant and non-sticky properties that makes them an ideal option both for cooking and baking. They never damage the pots and pans, and are easy to clean because of their stick-resistant properties.
  • Wear and Tear: Wear and tear happens to everything that we own. It may be the items used in the kitchen or outside it. So, it's just a natural process to expect. When it comes to choosing utensils for meeting your household needs, nylon utensils are considered to have a much stronger shell. They are more preferable than silicone utensils, as they do not scratch off the coatings on pans and skillets.
  • Price: On average, nylon materials are much economical than silicone. Silicone is highly durable, but costs three times higher than nylon. So, if you go with nylon, you can save more utilize it on any other necessary kitchenware items.
  • Cooking Safety: Nylon utensils can combat bacteria better than your average spatula or spoon made from any other metals. And hence, they are absolutely safe to use while preparing food or cooking.
The right kind of kitchen utensils or equipment make cooking easier and the kitchen operates more efficiently. Today there are numerous types of kitchen tools, utensils, cookware and small appliances available in the market that can distract you with ease. So, hasty decisions should be avoided as much as possible while choosing your kitchenware items. Be careful and pick the right set for a clean, easy and healthy usability.

  1. You say "heat resistant nylon utensils". I find the spatulas anything but. The front edge of these always melts and builds up a ridge of melted material. Allegedly silicone will resist up to 600º where nylon will only take 400º. I have just bought a silicone one to experiment, so can't comment on it yet.
